Canon 200D or Nikon D5300 for college?

May 22, 2019

We’re here to help you choose and not overspend on an expensive camera you may end up using only once during college projects.

Colleges are coming up with more and more innovative ways to involve students in interactive projects. One of those methods are short-films and documentaries made by students. No commerce students, you don’t need to worry your heads over this. Cameras are needed by arts and science students. Just kidding, college is the one time where you get to make the most memorable time of your lives. Capture them forever, but choose a camera before you do.

DSLRs are for timeless memories, unlike smartphone cameras that are probably going to be lost with time and are far inferior in quality as compared to DSLRs. Choosing the right one will be an investment that will last you a lifetime. We’re specifically looking at the industry’s semi-professional, mid-tier variants - The Canon 200D and the Nikon D5300 respectively.

Features: The 200D is an absolute flagship boasting of 24.2MP CMOS sensor that capture clear color like no other. The autofocus on it is fair for it’s segment and it is compatible with most Canon lenses. The D5300 is pretty much similar to the 200D, in that, they both come with flippable LCD screens, however the Canon 200D has a clearer, more optimised display. They are both easy to handle, and come with built-in flash. While the Canon has optimal software to capture colors in brilliant quality, the larger sensor on the Nikon does a much better job, software be damned. What makes Canon 200D a clear winner however, is that it is wifi and bluetooth enabled. A feature that Nikon offers in higher variants only.

Usage: All of your camera requirements boils down to your usage. Some courses require full-fledged short-films, even better if you can add some production level quality (See Recommended Laptops ). Those courses demand for a semi-professional DSLR camera to be used for it’s video quality. Science courses now too, require video documentaries of experiments or projects being made, especially in the field of engineering. No demand for professional level production quality here, but recording clarity is a mandatory requirement.

Personally, if you’re buying a camera to make memories, we’d recommend the D5300 pretty much for it’s built-in flash and better low-light capabilities. You’re gonna thank us when you’re partying at night and clicking away on this camera. Imagine taking DSLR quality selfies with the D5300.
