5 signs your speaker needs a specialist treatment

October 02, 2019

Isn’t it frustrating when you need your speakers the most and they don’t work? Following signs will provide you with knowledge for your own inspection.

1. Distortion sound

Audio distortion usually occurs when a speaker can’t detect the volume level it’s playing at. You might hear a buzzing sound or a slight rattling sound, such noises can be indications that something in the speaker has been overdriven. So play a similar bass line rhythm and turn up your speakers to a reasonable volume, through this you should be able to hear some level of distortion. If there is no sound, first check the connections to make sure everything is hooked up properly. A speaker that is completely garbled will emit no sound or be extremely distorted.

2. Range of speakers

Your speaker needs to be in the audible frequency range for you to hear it but if you notice a lack of a certain low, mid or high range then do a simple test by isolating that one speaker in order to compare that particular speaker to the others.

3. Speaker movement

Functioning speakers should always have some sort of movement at medium to high volume levels. Woofers move noticeably when producing low frequencies and often pump air out that you can feel. Pull the speaker grill off  which is either hard/soft and is usually found in the front of the stereo over the face of the speaker to feel if the woofer is moving. If the speaker is warped it will not be moving.

4. Multimeter test

A multi-meter test will help you determine your speaker status. First, Turn the stereo off. Connect a multimeter to the speaker terminals which will detect any obstruction, or  opposition of an electric current to the energy flow. A blown speaker will read infinite, whereas a speaker that is not blown should read "1."

5. Smell test

You can usually smell the damage. The burnt varnish has a very distinct smell, so do follow your nose on this one. You can also remove the speaker grill located in front of the speaker and lightly push the cone which is the main active area of the amplifier in and release it. Don’t force the cone, if it does not move freely then it may be fried.
